Fiasco Theater's Production of The Verge
This fall, Fiasco Theater and The Public partner to celebrate a hidden American classic: THE VERGE by Susan Glaspell, Pulitzer Prize winner and founder of the Provincetown Players. In Glaspell’s 1921 masterpiece, botanist Claire Archer is on a quest to create a new life: a plant unlike any that has ever come before. When her husband, lover, and soulmate each arrive in her greenhouse seeking heat in a snowstorm, chaos ensues. But as Claire pushes–sometimes violently—against the constraints of her own good breeding, she wonders if the only way to transcend boundaries is to destroy them. By turns witty farce, devastating philosophical debate, and scathing feminist cry, THE VERGE defies genre and pierces the bounds of theatrical realism. Jessie Austrian directs this new Fiasco production.
“I fell in love with THE VERGE when EXPAND THE CANON, an organization that curates a collection of classic plays by women through history, sent the script my way in 2023 and then partnered with Fiasco on a reading of THE VERGE as part of their 2023-24 advocacy,” shares director Jessie Austrian. “I was floored by Susan Glaspell's writing: the daring, the humor, the vast topography within the play—its refusal to conform to one style or genre. And I immediately thought of my colleague Miriam Silverman, who I knew would be tremendous in the role of Claire. Fiasco is thrilled to be partnering with The Public to revive this masterpiece, which feels deeply immediate despite being written a hundred years ago.”

Monologue Book Launch
Join us for the launch of our VERY FIRST BOOK! We’re celebrating on June 8th, where you can buy a signed copy of the book before it’s officially on sale.
"A monologue book of staggering consequence… Move over Arthur Miller, Shakespeare, and Strindberg, and make room for Alice Childress, Aphra Behn, Ntozake Shange."
- John Douglas Thompson, Tony Award-nominated actor, winner of 2 Drama Desk Awards, 3 Obie Awards, an Outer Critics Circle Award, and a Lortel Award
This volume gathers 110 standout monologues by great playwrights that are classic, but less familiar. They span 350 years, 15 countries, and 8 languages of origin — works by 34 historic women and gender-expansive playwrights that are powerful, but under-represented. That gives actors the chance to stand out when performing them. From Aphra Behn to Alice Childress, George Sand to Catherine the Great, Sor Juana Ines de la Cruz to Zora Neale Hurston, these works are dynamic, well-crafted, and worthy of being performed time and time again.
Bold Stroke for a Husband x American Shakespeare Center
“Handsome and bold — you are the man for my lady.” — Act V, Scene III
In Madrid, scandal is never far away. Don Carlos has lost more than his heart—he’s accidentally signed his fortune over to his mistress, Laura. Now, desperate to win it back, he teams up with his old friend Don Julio, whose return to the city sparks a tangle of flirtations and mistaken identities.
Meanwhile, Olivia, a sharp-tongued heiress who refuses to be married off, keeps every suitor guessing—including her music-loving admirer and her exasperated father, Don Caesar. When her cousin Victoria arrives in disguise to reclaim her straying husband, secrets unravel, plans backfire, and love turns the city upside down.
From secret letters to midnight encounters, Hannah Cowley’s A Bold Stroke for a Husband is a witty whirlwind of scheming lovers, clever women, and social satire. This rediscovered comedy comes to the ASC through Expand the Canon, an initiative uncovering and uplifting overlooked classic plays by women.

Set in a greenhouse/laboratory, botanist Claire Archer attempts to transcend the constraints of modern life through the breeding of new plants, despite a literal Tom, Dick, and Harry trying to stop her. As the blossoming of her latest creation approaches, her sanity is called into question and tensions around her unique way of life explode. A piece that is by turns devastating philosophical portraiture, droll farce, and scathing feminist cry, The Verge comes together in a pressure cooker analysis of prescribed womanhood.

Written amidst the Harlem Renaissance while she was studying anthropology at Barnard, Hurston set Spunk in a small Florida town resembling her own hometown of Eatonville, one of America’s first incorporated Black townships. In Spunk, a tall, handsome stranger strolls into town looking for work. With undeniable charisma and divine musicianship, Spunk sets tongues to wagging with admiration and envy. The laws of man, the power of hoodoo, and the divinity of love all collide when he locks eyes with Evalina, already married to the local conjurer’s son.
Said Woodard in a statement, “There’s such a profound feeling of celebration around giving life to a text that has been waiting for nearly a century to receive a full staging. Spunk is a singular work and a gorgeous synthesis of Zora Neale Hurston’s passions: Black folk music, mythology, oral storytelling and putting black vernacular on the page as it was spoken in these rural places at the time. Nehemiah builds the play’s musical world from Hurston’s own cultural anthropology, recordings and the clues she left behind in her extensive body of work, and nicHi’s choreography meets the musical landscape with vibrancy and celebration. Finally, Zora gets to be a celebrated playwright alongside her other celebrated writerly identities. We’re aiming to give Hurston’s words the breadth of theatrical life she imagined. It’s exhilarating to lead this historic production.”
Woodard's creative team will include music director John Bronston, scenic designer Karen Loewy Movilla, costume designer Kristen Taylor, lighting designer Gib Gibney, sound designer Justin Ellington, projection designer Ke Xu 许可, hair designer Matthew Armentrout, production dramaturgs Eric M. Glover and Catherine Sheehy, technical director Tom Minucci, fight and intimacy directors Kelsey Rainwater and Michael Rossmy, vocal coach Julie Foh, associate director Stephanie Rolland, casting director Calleri Jensen Davis, and stage manager James Mountcastle.
